Ways to a sustainable laboratory
On January 26 and 27, 2026, the Vice Dean's Office for Sustainability attended a symposium on “Sustainable Laboratory Operations” in Göttingen. In addition to exciting keynotes and practical examples, the conference also offered many opportunities for networking and participation.
Successful Establishment of the LEAF Certification Program at the University of Bonn & UKB
To strengthen sustainability in research, the University of Bonn and the University Hospital Bonn (UKB) introduced the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) last year. LEAF is an international certification program developed by University College London and was successfully piloted in collaboration with the first participating laboratories at both institutions. The successful establishment of LEAF and the achievement of Bronze certification by all participating laboratories will be celebrated jointly in January 2026. At the same time, registration for additional laboratories interested in joining the LEAF program is currently open.
“You’re Gold” – The Largest UKB Summer Festival 2025
On August 29, the University Hospital Bonn (UKB) held its largest summer festival to date. The Vice Dean’s Office for Sustainability, together with ukb green, was once again represented with an information booth dedicated to the topic of sustainability.

Since mid-2024, the Vice Dean's Office for Sustainability at the Faculty of Medicine has been the official management unit in this area. In addition to its lead management by the Vice Deans Prof. Wachten and Prof. Beck, a three-person team contributes to a holistic commitment to sustainability.

On July 8, 2024, the Vice Dean's Office for Sustainability and Scientific Infrastructure was established within the Medical Dean's Office by a vote of the Faculty Council. As Germany’s first—and so far only—Vice Dean's Office dedicated to sustainability, this marks a significant milestone both for the university and UKB, as well as for advancing a more sustainable future..
