Erasm Study Visits - Student Mobility for Studies

Study abroad in Europe, get to know another university and health care system, acquire credits and secure recognition, improve foreign language skills and make international contacts - the Erasmus program makes all this and much more possible! For more than 30 years now, the Erasmus program of the European Union has been writing success stories in Europe and the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn has been part of it almost from the beginning. Approximately 50 to 60 students of medicine from Bonn participate every year in the program branch "Student Mobility for Studies" and are financially supported with a monthly mobility contribution of 330 - 450 EUR (depending on the country group). Erasmus stays of one to two semesters are possible. The intended time is the 3rd to 6th clinical semester.

Recognition of Credits obtained Abroad

The Erasmus program is the exchange program for students of the EU, which aims at the academic recognition of credits obtained abroad. This is done through the Learning Agreement made prior to the visit abroad and the subsequent recognition of the credits earned abroad by the State Examination Office for Medicine. The Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn has been successfully participating in the Erasmus program since 1989. Every year, about 50-60 medical students from Bonn go abroad with Erasmus. In return, around 40-50 medical students currently come to Bonn with Erasmus each year.

Erasmus+ Internship - Student Mobility for Traineeships

The Erasmus program can also support internships abroad with a duration of 2-12 months.

Unlike Erasmus studies, which can only take place at a partner university, Student Mobility for Traineeships can support internships in almost all 28 EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey and FYROM Macedonia.

(Switzerland is currently excluded from the Erasmus + program. The whereabouts of the UK in Erasmus funding is currently unresolved).
Due to the required minimum duration of 60 calendar days, we primarily fund four-month PJ tertials in the European program countries.

However, research internships and clinical traineeships can also be considered for Erasmus Traineeship funding, provided they have the minimum duration of two months. Split tertials can only be included in the funding if the required minimum duration is achieved.
Unlike under the program branch of Erasmus study, students do not apply for a place in the Erasmus internship funding, but only for the financial Erasmus funding.
The internship abroad must be organized by the students themselves.

The amount of funding in the Erasmus program is graded according to country groups.
The Erasmus program does not provide full scholarships, but mobility grants are intended to compensate for the increased cost of living in the host countries.
The grant currently covers a monthly amount of 435 - 555 euros depending on the destination country.

Erasmus Praktikum:

Framework Requirements for Erasmus+ Internship Funding

  • You have secured a place for yourself on a study abroad program in one of the EU member states or in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Macedonia or Turkey. (*Switzerland is still excluded from the Erasmus program for political reasons. Funding in Germany is not possible).
  • Your internship abroad is between 2 and 12 months long. Unfortunately, funding for a split tertial is not possible without an extension because the EU stipulates a minimum duration of 60 calendar days (calculated from the first to the last day of the internship including the weekends included, which results in only 54 days for the regular duration of a split tertial).
  • Not only German students can be sponsored, but also foreign students who are pursuing a full course of study at the University of Bonn.
  • You can receive the Erasmus Internship Funding even if you have already studied abroad once with the Erasmus program.

Application Process

Twice a year, the selection process for Erasmus traineeship funding takes place.

Application deadline for the spring rotation (PJ start in May): March 15.

Application deadline for the fall rotation (PJ start in November): September 15.

Additional information COVID-19:

As there have been repeated cancellations since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the central application and selection procedures for Erasmus+ internship funding will continue to be suspended in 2021. However, internships abroad that are taking place are eligible for funding upon application, after receipt of the completed application documents, as long as funding is available. If you have a firm commitment for an eligible international tertial, please send us an email (at least two months before the start of the international tertial) with details of the tertial and the clinic to be taken on. We will then send you the necessary documents.
