Erasmus study visits - Student Mobility for Studies

Studying in another European country, getting to know another university and healthcare system, acquiring certificates of achievement and guaranteed recognition, improving your foreign language skills and making international contacts - the Erasmus program makes all this and much more possible! The European Union's Erasmus program has been a success story in Europe for more than 30 years now, and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bonn has been involved almost from the very beginning. Around 50 to 60 medical students from Bonn take part in the “Student Mobility for Studies” program every year and are financially supported with a monthly mobility contribution of EUR 490 - 600 (depending on the country group). Erasmus stays of one to two semesters are possible. The intended period is the 3rd to 6th clinical semester.

Application procedure and requirements

The application procedure for Erasmus study visits takes place once a year. The procedure starts with an information event in November of each year for all students who are considering an Erasmus stay in the following winter semester and the following summer semester. In the upcoming application procedure, you can apply for Erasmus stays in Wise 25/26 and Sose 26. The application deadline will be January 15, 2025.

Requirements for an application

  • Enrolment as a regular student of human medicine at the Faculty of Medicine Bonn
  • At least in the 3rd clinical semester at the start of the Erasmus stay
Duration of stay of at least 2 (except for trimesters) and max. 12 months

Recognition of academic achievements completed abroad

The Erasmus program is the EU's exchange program for students, which aims at the academic recognition of study achievements abroad. This takes place via the Learning Agreement concluded before the study visit and the subsequent recognition of the academic achievements abroad by the State Examination Office for Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bonn has been successfully participating in the Erasmus program since 1989. Every year, around 50-60 medical students from Bonn go abroad with Erasmus. In return, around 40-50 medical students currently come to Bonn each year on Erasmus.

Erasmus+ Internship - Student Mobility for Traineeships

The Erasmus program can also fund internships abroad with a duration of 2-12 months.

Unlike Erasmus studies, which can only be completed at a partner university, the Student Mobility for Traineeships program can fund internships in almost all 28 EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey and FYROM Macedonia.

(Switzerland is currently excluded from the Erasmus + program. The UK's continued participation in Erasmus funding is currently unclear).
Due to the required minimum duration of 60 calendar days, we primarily support four-month PJ tertials in the European program countries.

However, research internships and clinical traineeships can also be considered for Erasmus traineeship funding, provided they last at least two months. Split tertials can only be included in the funding if the required minimum duration is reached.
In contrast to the Erasmus program branch, students do not apply for a place in the Erasmus traineeship funding, but only for the financial Erasmus funding.
The internship abroad must be organized by the students themselves.

The amount of funding in the Erasmus program is staggered according to country groups.
The Erasmus program does not provide full scholarships, but rather mobility grants are intended to compensate for the increased living costs in the host countries.
The grant currently comprises a monthly amount of 640 - 750 euros depending on the destination country.

Erasmus Internship:
Sponsored to other European countries

An internship abroad is a temporary practical activity at an educational institution, organization or company abroad. An internship abroad offers the opportunity to combine experience abroad with professional practice and thus actively prepare for your future career. You can find all the information you need on the University of Bonn website.

General conditions for the Erasmus+ Internship funding

  • You have secured yourself a place on an internship abroad in one of the EU member states or in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Macedonia or Turkey. (*Switzerland is still excluded from the Erasmus program for political reasons. Funding in Germany is not possible).
  • Your internship abroad is between 2 and 12 months long. Unfortunately, funding for a split tertial is not possible without an extension because the EU stipulates a minimum duration of 60 calendar days (calculated from the first to the last day of the internship, including weekends, which results in only 54 days for the regular duration of a split tertial).
  • Not only German students are eligible for funding, but also foreign students who are completing a full degree course at the University of Bonn.
You can also receive Erasmus internship funding if you have already studied abroad with the Erasmus program.

Application procedure

All Bonn PJ students in the next PJ cohort will receive a circular by e-mail (in January for PJ start in May; in July for PJ start in November) with information on Erasmus internship funding as part of a PJ tertial in another European country. Of course, you can obtain information and advice on Erasmus internship funding in advance from the Erasmus office.

If you have a firm commitment for a tertial abroad that is eligible for funding, please send us an e-mail (at least three months before the start of the tertial abroad) stating the tertial and the clinic to be included. We will then send you the necessary documents.

Additional information regarding COVID-19:

As there have been repeated rejections since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the central application and selection procedures for Erasmus+ internship funding are still suspended. However, internships abroad can be funded on application after receipt of the completed application documents as long as funding is available.
