Lectureships at the Medical Faculty

Lectureships as part of academic studies

Institutes and clinics whose teaching capacity is insufficient to deliver the compulsory courses in human or dental medicine, or that are unable to cover certain subject areas themselves, may apply for the appointment of external lecturers to provide support.

The corresponding application must be submitted to the (narrower) Faculty Council via the Office of Student Affairs.

Following approval, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bonn – again via the Office of Student Affairs – issues a teaching assignment to the external lecturer, which is initially limited to the current semester. As a rule, external teaching assignments are remunerated and financed from the budget of the commissioning institute or clinic. The application for a teaching assignment must be submitted in writing and must include the following details: the name, first name, and academic title of the proposed lecturer; information about the course in which the teaching will take place; the number of teaching hours per week (SWS); and a justification for why external teaching support is necessary. In addition, it must be stated whether the teaching assignment is to be remunerated or unpaid. In the case of a remunerated assignment, the cost center to be charged must also be specified.

As a rule, the Faculty Council decides on the teaching assignments for the following semester in its final meeting of the current semester. Therefore, the corresponding application must be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs no later than four weeks prior to the final Faculty Council meeting.

Since a teaching assignment can only be granted for the upcoming semester, an application must also be submitted if the previous semester has ended but the teaching assignment is to be continued.

According to the Rectorate’s resolution of February 22, 2021, the remuneration per individual hour taught (45 minutes) is as follows:

€65.00 (for external professors at W3 level)
€60.00 (for lecturers with habilitation)
€45.00 (for lecturers with a university degree)

The required documents are available for download.

Lectureships in the Practical Year

Physician staff members involved in the Practical Year (PJ) training at the academic teaching hospitals of the University of Bonn are granted an unpaid teaching assignment. This authorizes them to train PJ students and to conduct the oral-practical component of the Third Medical Licensing Examination. According to § 15 (1) of the German Medical Licensing Regulations ( § 15 Abs. 1 ÄAppO), a teaching assignment issued by the university also entitles the holder to chair an examination board.

Teaching assignments for PJ training are valid for one year and are issued by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
