The Doctoral Dissertation Award for an outstanding doctoral thesis of exceptional scientific relevance has been awarded every year since 2009. This year’s winner was Dr. Lisa Hoffmann for her thesis entitled “On the Psychology of Birth,” which she completed at the Department of Psychology. The Doctoral Dissertation Award is worth €10,000.

Dr. Maike Effern received the Bonn Award for Medicine for her thesis, “Modelling melanoma control by immunotherapy and tissue-resident memory T cells using CRISPR/Cas9-based approaches.” This €5,000 prize has been awarded every year since 2012 from the Prof. Dr. Rolf und Dr. Gisela Dederich-Stiftung in recognition of excellent doctoral theses.

With the Dr. Edmund ter Meer Award, the UGB commemorates its eponymous benefactor and honors outstanding doctoral theses in the field of chemistry every year. This year’s €2,000 prize was won by Dr. Steffen Straub for his doctoral thesis entitled “Elucidation of ultrafast photolysis processes using time resolved infrared spectroscopy.”

Initiative Award for Bonn Physics Show

There can hardly be a better way to experience physics so vividly and up close: several times a year, children, young people and adults come to the University of Bonn’s Physics Show to be amazed and learn new things. The shows are organized and led by highly committed physics students, who give up their free time to present physics experiments in an entertaining and instructive way. In particular, this year’s Initiative Award was in recognition of the Physics Show musical “Planetamos” and the Christmas Physics Show on YouTube entitled “Der Physikalische Adventskalender” (“The Advent Calendar of Physics”).

Laura Rodríguez Gómez and Anne Stockhausen accepted the prize on behalf of their whole team. The €2,000 Initiative Award honors students who go the extra mile to serve the common good, put students in touch with the world of work or contribute to the dialogue between the University and the general public.

Changes in the wake of the pandemic

The UGB’s awards ceremony traditionally forms part of a winter soirée held in November. As the coronavirus pandemic prevented this from happening in 2021, the prizewinners were notified accordingly at the time. Now, finally, the actual prize-giving has been able to take place at a spring matinée in the Arithmeum. The 2020 awards ceremony was held entirely online.

After a few words of welcome, UGB Chairperson Michael Kranz handed over to his deputy and chair of the jury Dr. Max P. Baur, who presented the UGB’s prizes at the matinée. The reception that followed allowed UGB members to get to know this year’s prizewinners even better. The event was provided with musical accompaniment from Berlin’s “Max Brod Trio.”
