After completing his studies, he initially began specialist training in oncology at the Internal Medicine Clinic (tumor research) at the West German Cancer Center at Essen University Hospital, before moving to the Clinic for Radiation Therapy at the same location. In 2021, Dr. Layer returned to the Clinic for Radiation Therapy at the University Hospital Bonn as a research assistant and assistant physician. He has been working there as a senior physician since 2024 and was appointed head of the Translational Radio-Oncology Section in 2025.

Dr. Layer's scientific focus is on the treatment of neuro-oncological tumors. As a clinician scientist, he conducts research at the interface between clinic and laboratory with a particular focus on combining classic percutaneous radiation therapy with modern, innovative radiation therapy and targeted systemic therapy methods. Another scientific focus is the development and optimization of supportive therapeutic strategies and the identification of prognostically relevant biomarkers for the individualization of radiation therapy.

For his scientific work, Dr. Layer has been awarded the Medicine Prize of the Bonn University Society and the Study Prize of the Radiation Oncology Working Group of the German Cancer Society, among others.
