General studies orientation

First, we will briefly introduce you to the special features of the dual midwifery degree program. It differs significantly from non-dual bachelor's degree programs in a number of ways.

Dual studies:

  • Close integration of theoretical teaching at the University of Bonn and practical training at the University Hospital Bonn and other partners.
  • As a dual student, you will receive a training contract from the University Hospital Bonn with the corresponding standard training allowance.
  • Due to the (legally prescribed) nature of dual study programs, deviations from the usual university semester structures may occur. Vacation entitlement is based on labor law.
  • With this degree program, you will earn a double qualification: state-recognized midwife + bachelor's degree in midwifery science.

Scope and structure of the program:

  • 8 semesters standard period of study, 240 ECTS
  • The program includes 2,240 hours of clinical/non-clinical practice in accordance with the requirements of the Midwifery Act (HebG).
  • The state examinations for midwives take place in the 7th and 8th semesters, and the bachelor's thesis is scheduled for the 8th semester.

Career options:

After completing your studies, you can work as a freelance midwife or as a midwife employed in obstetrics departments. You can cover the entire field of midwifery care (pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care). It is also possible to continue on to a master's program and pursue an academic career in teaching and research.

Goal

The bachelor's degree program in midwifery science serves to qualify specialists who have scientific expertise and are able to master the challenges of midwifery in healthcare practice. In addition, graduates will be able to reflect on their practical work in a scientifically sound manner. The program thus meets the need for application-oriented and scientifically trained experts in obstetric facilities.

Contents

Das Studium gliedert sich in 4 Lernbereiche:

Learning area 2, scientific and medical knowledge required to practice midwifery

Learning area 4, fundamentals of scientific thinking and working, as well as fundamentals of quantitative and qualitative research

You can find a detailed description of the course and module content in the module handbook.
