ArHyPaRE/Professional behaviour

ArHyPaRE/Professional Conduct is a longitudinal curriculum integrated into the medical degree program at the University of Bonn. It teaches professional conduct in an interdisciplinary manner based on recommendations from the fields of occupational safety, hygiene, law, and ethics, and was developed as part of a teaching project of the same name.

Objective

The aim of the curriculum is to teach professional conduct in an interdisciplinary manner based on competencies and best practices in occupational safety, hygiene, patient safety, law, and ethics. Professional conduct is

a) committed to one's own well-being,
b) the patient,
c) the community, and
d) the medical profession.

The curriculum is based on the Canadian CanMEDS framework, the National Competency-Based Learning Objectives Catalog for Medicine (NKLM), and the recommendations of the Expert Commission on the Master Plan for Medical Studies 2020.

Methods

The starting point for the curriculum is a catalog of learning objectives developed by the working group of the teaching project of the same name, based on the NKLM and mapped to it.

The learning objectives currently addressed include getting vaccinated, measures to prevent injuries with sharp or pointed instruments, measures to take in the event of injuries with sharp or pointed instruments, the use of personal protective equipment, skin protection and care, measures to prevent infections in oneself, patients, and employees, contributing to a culture of speaking up and listening up in an interprofessional team, measures to prevent patient mix-ups, and measures to prevent violations of legal duties of care or confidentiality.

The learning objectives are currently taught in three courses tailored to the respective level of learning, which are integrated into the introductory course of each of the three sections of medical studies (pre-clinical, clinical, practical year) using, among other things, integrated interdisciplinary scenarios such as blood collection. In addition, students and teachers are provided with teaching materials such as comprehensive lecture notes, an educational film, and a poster or flyer on blood sampling.

The curriculum is being further developed as part of the teaching project on the basis of evaluations.

Study project

The interdisciplinary teaching project was implemented in stages in 2015 by a project group with the participation of the Dean's Office and has been the responsibility of the Institute for Patient Safety (Institute Director Prof. Matthias Weigl, responsible coordinator Dr. Elisabeth Pilz) since 2021. It is a teaching collaboration between Dr. Henrike Steudel (formerly responsible for teaching occupational medicine), Prof. Steffen Engelhart (Institute for Public Health and Hygiene, Head of Hospital Hygiene), Dr. Susanne Abels (Institute for Public Health and Hygiene), Prof. Matthias Weigl (see above), and Anke Stümpfig, Ass. iur. (Ethics Commission Office). Since 2015, the project has been funded by quality improvement funds from the Faculty of Medicine.
