Quality improvement

The Quality Improvement Commission (QVK) supports projects aimed at enhancing the quality of teaching. The Ministry of Culture and Science provides quality improvement funds to universities in the state. These funds must be used primarily to support full-time teaching staff and full-time teaching support personnel. Applications for funding of student assistants (SHK), research assistants (WHK), guest lecturers, as well as material or capital expenses, can only be approved to a limited extent. Funding can only be granted if it is applied for before any expenditure is incurred. Quality improvement funds are considered initial (start-up) funding. Any follow-up funding applications must include an evaluation of the outcomes of the previous funding period. This evaluation does not need to follow a specific format but must be attached to the new application.

The legal basis for the QVK is the Act to Improve Quality in Teaching and Studies at Universities in North Rhine-Westphalia (Studiumqualitätsgesetz) dated March 1, 2011. Furthermore, the Rectorate’s guidelines on the allocation and use of funds for quality improvement according to §1 of the Study Quality Act dated February 17, 2012, regulate the distribution of funds for the University of Bonn.

Regulations at the Medical Faculty

At the Medical Faculty, the Quality Improvement Commission (QVK), chaired by the Dean of Studies, Prof. Dr. Bernd Pötzsch, is responsible for managing funding applications aimed at improving teaching and ensuring the proper use of allocated funds. The QVK is composed of the Dean of Studies, seven student representatives from the student council, four university lecturers, and two research staff members. The QVK reviews applications based on formal and substantive criteria, with particular focus on the extent to which the proposed measure or planned project contributes to enhancing teaching quality. Furthermore, the commission ensures that synergies between different applications are utilized, and carefully examines the planned costs.

DThe Quality Improvement Commission (QVK) usually meets three times a year, and additional meetings may be held as needed. You may submit your application at any time, but no later than 14 days before each meeting, exclusively by email to qvk@ukbonn.de. Paper applications cannot be considered. Please use the PDF application form provided below.

Describe your proposed measure in such a way that the members of the QVK can clearly see how it contributes to improving teaching beyond the standard. Include a summary of this in the application form. Attach a detailed cost breakdown or estimate to your application. Please differentiate between personnel costs, material expenses, and investments. Note that replacement purchases of standard equipment are not eligible for funding.

Once your application has been reviewed by the QVK, it will be submitted to the Dean’s Office for final approval. You will then be notified accordingly. Depending on the extent of the funding, you may be asked to report on the progress and success of the measure.

Unused funds will expire at the end of the approved period. Investments remain the property of the faculty and will be provided to the beneficiary on a loan basis.
