Bonn Longitudinal Communication Curriculum (BonnKomm)
The upcoming paradigm shift in medical education, training, and continuing education toward competency-based teaching and learning requires the longitudinal, interdisciplinary acquisition and testing of knowledge and practical skills.
In addition, attitudes and professional medical roles must also be taught and adopted (Master Plan 2020, National Competency-Based Learning Objectives Catalog for Medicine3 (NKLM) and National Competency-Based Learning Objectives Catalog for Dentistry4 (NKLZ)).
One very important medical role is that of communicator. Medical communication skills are of central importance for our healthcare system and for successfully establishing a trusting relationship between doctors and patients.
General information
The Bonn Longitudinal Communication Curriculum (BonnKomm) is an integral part of the curriculum for medical students and teaches communication-related knowledge and skills in accordance with the guidelines of the NKLM and NKLZ. This includes the Simulation Person Program (SPP), which offers the opportunity to use specially trained actors in teaching courses in order to teach dialogue-centered medicine in a practical manner and to test it in an objective structured practical examination (OSCE), among other things. This allows students to practice professional communication skills in a protected environment, from taking medical histories to discussing findings and providing information to delivering bad news.
AG BonnKomm
In order to further develop the Bonn longitudinal communication curriculum in accordance with the above-mentioned guidelines, a working group was formed at our faculty several years ago with experts from various disciplines.
The expansion of our simulation program (SPP) and the formation of a BonnKomm team have resulted in a diverse range of offerings for teachers and students.
Our offer
We support students and teachers throughout their studies. To this end, we provide, among other things, a discussion guide based on communication theory at our faculty.
We are happy to support teachers in designing courses for teaching and testing communication skills, social skills, and interaction.
On the University of Bonn's eCampus (ILIAS) e-learning platform, on the magazine page of the Faculty of Medicine, there is a BonnKomm course room that is open to all. There you will find in-depth information, materials, and learning modules on communication and conversation skills for teachers and students (university ID required).
KommMed.NRW
Our faculty is a member of the KommMed.NRW network.
