Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Holzgreve, Medical Director and Chairman of the Board of the UKB, emphasized when welcoming the guests: "We made a very conscious decision to build our teaching building for the more than 3,000 medical students with the extension close to our education center because we want to promote interdisciplinary education." The teaching building is a central teaching and learning location for the study of medicine in Bonn: a large proportion of the courses in the clinical study section take place here, as do events in preclinical medicine with clinical references, dentistry or other courses.
The teaching building is intended to be a place of exchange and campus life, where learners as well as teachers from different disciplines and professions come together. The offer is complemented by the new educational center, which is strategically located. Together with the Skillslab, which is to be further developed in the future, a practice-oriented, interprofessional education of the health professions is to be realized at the Bonn location. The close proximity to the education center enables an even stronger inter-professional exchange. In addition to medical students, Bonn University Hospital trains more than 500 young people annually for various healthcare professions.
Investment for the improvement of teaching in medicine
The extension building was commissioned for the planned 6.8 million euros, including initial furnishings and restoration of the outdoor facilities, and realized from the measures and investment program for improving the quality of teaching in medicine. "We are very grateful to the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for this," Holzgreve continued.
Joint (digital) teaching, learning and testing
The interactive teaching media technology in the building enables teachers to offer engaging courses that cover all forms of delivery - digital, hybrid or even traditional. A media technology-enhanced floor with digital recording technology and observation capabilities similar to professional simulation rooms offers excellent opportunities for teaching. Prof. Dr. Bernd Weber, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine: "With the expansion of the teaching building, we are taking another important step in improving the infrastructure for our teaching. In doing so, this building will be able to be used for modern teaching and examination formats as well as for self-learning by students."
The expansion of the teaching building will enable the implementation of modern OSCE exam courses that include practical tasks. OSCE stands for Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation, a form of examination that tests not only theoretical knowledge but also very practical skills such as mastering medical routines and dealing appropriately with patients. An OSCE is structured like an examination course. The students pass through various stations one after the other, which deal, for example, with anamnesis, examination methods, interpretation of findings and patient management. In the future, the new rooms with video recording and observation windows will make it possible to improve the design of examinations in addition to possible teaching simulations.
The Master Plan for Medical Studies 2020 and the current draft of the new Medical Licensing Regulations provide the corresponding framework for learning content and (digital) teaching and examination formats. The changed curriculum for medical students required additional internship or work rooms, as well as an addition to the teaching rooms, which are given with the extension, whose roof is greened and can optionally be retrofitted for photovoltaics. A major advantage of the extension is the synergetic use of the rooms. For example, mobile partition walls allow the necessary flexibility. On a gross floor area of 1,407 square meters, students can now use ten seminar rooms - four of which can be flexibly divided.
In accordance with the strict hygiene regulations currently in force, few guests were able to attend the event, which was also transmitted via zoom. The event was followed by a guided tour of the new building, which was also attended by Dr. Dirk Günnewig, State Secretary for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
