Among the guests were important decision-makers from central healthcare facilities such as the Centro Policlínico del Olaya, the Clínica Nogales, and the IPS Virrey Solís – one of the most important healthcare providers in Bogotá with a comprehensive network of outpatient and inpatient facilities. Salud Total EPS, one of the largest health insurance companies in the country, was also represented.
The one-day program was organized by the Vice Dean's Office for Internationalization and Career Development, which is part of the Dean's Office of the Medical Faculty in Bonn. “It's always nice when there is international interest in developments at our medical center,” says Prof. Marieta Toma, Vice Dean for Internationalization and Young Researchers. “We were very pleased to welcome the delegation from Colombia.”
After a welcome by Prof. Bernd Weber, Dean of the Medical Faculty in Bonn, the group first visited the Department of Clinical Acute and Emergency Medicine at the University Hospital Bonn (UKB) and the Department for Epileptology. The guests then attended a presentation providing an overview of robot-assisted surgery in Bonn, with a focus on thoracic surgery and the Bonn Surgical Technology Center (BOSTER).
PD Dr. Theodor Rüber, who guided the guests through the Epileptology Department, served as a special bridge to the delegation. Next to being a research group leader at the UKB, he has worked through the organisation CASA HOGAR Deutschland e.V. for many years to improve educational and life opportunities for girls and young women in one of the poorest regions of Latin America. In August, he was awarded the Colombian Order of Democracy (“Orden de la Democracia Simón Bolívar”) for his commitment. At the beginning of December, German President Frank Walter Steinmeier also presented him with the Medal of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The visit offered guests a wide range of insights into the care provided by Bonn University Hospital. The delegation's response was very positive: the visitors were very interested in the topics presented and hoping to visit again.
