Since graduating with a degree in Biotechnology, my scientific work has focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of blood clotting. A major focus is the development of new diagnostic test systems that can be used to detect a tendency to bleed or thrombosis. By applying combinatorial chemistry, DNA-based aptamers could be developed and characterized, which are now successfully used in diagnostics as the basic building block of a newly developed assay format (oligonucleotide-based enzyme capture assay). I am involved in the routine diagnostics of the Institute of Experimental Hematology and Transfusion Medicine as head of the coagulation laboratory. Since 2017, I have been active as a member of the doctoral committee of the Faculty of Medicine. I have been involved in student teaching since the beginning of my work at the IHT, contributing in particular my expertise on the coagulation and HLA system with the corresponding laboratory analytics.

Brief personal introduction on gains for faculty and outline of involvement in teaching and research:

During his work as a assistant and specialist at the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Bonn, Prof. Schuss was significantly involved in the establishment of the neurovascular working group there. The development and establishment of the neurovascular network Rhein-Sieg in the sense of a clinic network for the optimal treatment of patients with neurovascular diseases falls in this area of responsibility. After his habilitation with a clear neurovascular emphasis and his appointment as senior doctor, Prof. Schuss became head of the research group "Neurosurgical Oncology" and had a decisive influence on the continuation of patient-oriented, interdisciplinary cooperation. Together with the Section for Neurooncology (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ulrich Herrlinger / Priv.-Doz. Dr. Niklas Schäfer), the Clinic for Neuroradiology (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alexander Radbruch) and the Clinic for Radiotherapy (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Frank Giordano), Prof. Schuss succeeded - in addition to numerous scientific projects - in paving the way for a CIO-wide brain metastases registry project.  

Prof. Schuss has been appointed Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at BG Clinic Emergency Hospital Berlin in September 2021. Brief personal introduction on gains for faculty and outline of involvement in teaching and research:

My clinical focus is on the conservative and surgical treatment of patients with tumors, eyelid malpositions and corneal diseases. In addition, I work clinically and scientifically in the field of ophthalmopathology, which has a long tradition in Germany but is now practiced at only a few university hospitals. With the subspecialization in the field of ocular development and clinical ophthalmopathological evaluation of fetal eyes, I have developed a unique selling point. This enables me not only to work on scientific questions concerning the development of the eye, but can also be helpful in pediatric pathological diagnostics.
After my return from a DFG-funded research fellowship in the USA, I established the research group "ocular tumors" with intra- and extramural third-party funding, which mainly focuses on the tumor microenvironment and epigentic changes in uveal melanoma.
My research activities are evidenced by numerous publications, including the first description of "Conjunctival stromal tumor (COST)" and "bilateral uveal melanoma in the setting of a BAP1 tumor predisposition syndrome".
In addition to the usual lectures, in order to meet the new requirements due to the pandemic situation and at the same time reach a larger audience, I have initiated a weekly ophthalmopathology lecture via Zoom. This is aimed at students and postgraduate trainees interested in ophthalmology.
My motivation arises from the desire to continuously improve clinical knowledge in eye medicine by linking ophthalmopathology and state-of-the-art methodology. In the future, I will continue to dedicate myself to my research projects and feel committed to my graduate students and undergraduates in a positive sense.

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

My entire clinical and scientific activity to date has focused on cognitive functions and their disorders in neurological, psychiatric and systemic diseases. More or less inevitably, I have therefore been involved for many years in the field of those diseases whose core symptom is a disturbance of cognition: dementias and their various causes. For the treatment and research of these diseases, the UKB with its interdisciplinary, neurological-psychiatric led Clinic for Neurodegenerative Diseases and Gerontopsychiatry and the immediate proximity to the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases offers an extraordinary infrastructure. In order to bridge the gap between basic scientific knowledge and clinical application, it is necessary to combine profound clinical experience with sound scientific and methodological skills. I try to fulfill this task and always try to train and inspire young junior staff for this path.

As an adjunct lecturer in geriatric psychiatry, I also try to teach what I consider to be the rather underrepresented topics of dementia and delirium in the medical curriculum, which are highly relevant to all practicing practitioners.

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

In recent years, I have been able to initiate and/or carry out various interdisciplinary projects with other clinics or departments at the UKB (e.g. radiology, nuclear medicine, palliative medicine, anesthesiology, dermatology, internal medicine, human genetics, the Center for Rare Diseases). In particular, the opportunity to broaden one's own perspective and to bring a psychosomatic perspective to other projects/specialties was an enriching challenge.

I would like to particularly highlight:
 - the Social Phobia Research project in collaboration with the Institute of Human Genetics Bonn as well as the Center for Human Genetics Marburg, in which we have been able to collect clinical and genetic data from over 1000 sufferers of social anxiety disorder since 2012.
 - the close cooperation with the Center for Rare Diseases, which has resulted in a textbook on rare diseases in addition to a large number of scientific publications.
 - the cooperation with radiology and nuclear medicine on the aspects of pain and quality of life in the context of innovative therapeutic procedures for oncological diseases (e.g. new radionuclide therapies, HIFU).

In teaching at the UKB within the framework of the internship and the lecture Psychosomatic Medicine, the basic course Clinical Examination as well as in the cross-sectional area Pain, my focus is on the disorders chronic pain/somatoform disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders and doctor-patient communication. It is my concern to introduce the students to a psychosomatic understanding of illness. This should include both the knowledge of neurobiological causes and treatments of diseases, as well as the knowledge of the close link between physical and psychological symptoms, so that in the medical approach the suffering person is not lost from view.

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

The gain of the faculty is the first establishment of the subject "Maternal Medicine" in Germany. The focus is on high-risk pregnancies with pre-existing diseases. Especially for heart diseases, Prof Merz has established a close clinical and scientific collaboration with the clinics of the Heart Center at the UK Bonn. She is integrated in various research networks of the UK Bonn and its partners in the context of molecular genetic investigation of congenital malformations. Furthermore, she is involved in several national and international studies.
Prof. Merz is actively involved in teaching. She has initiated the seminar "Pregnancy in the presence of pre-existing conditions", is a lecturer in the Master's program in Global Health, and conducts clinical rounds.

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

Prof. Dr. Soyhan Bağcı studied in Bursa (Turkey) and graduated with his license to practice medicine in 1997. He then completed his residency and doctorate, also in Turkey. In 2004, he moved to Germany and had to complete the pediatric residency again here, as well as the focus training in neonatology. In 2008, he was appointed senior doctor in the Department of Neonatology under the direction of Prof. Bartmann. With the beginning of his work at the University Hospital Bonn, he laid the foundation for his scientific achievements especially in the field of research of melatonin status in neonates and pediatric intensive care patients, received his PhD again in 2010 and habilitated here at the University Hospital Bonn in 2013.

In recent years, he has expanded his field of research to include the influence of biodynamic light in the context of melatonin and oxidative stress on patients in an inpatient setting. As a result, on his initiative, his research findings on the circadian (melatonin) rhythm could be implemented in the project "Parent-Child Center (ELKI) with Biodynamic Lighting" at Bonn University Hospital.

Within the Department of Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine, Prof. Dr. Bağcı heads the neonatology laboratory as well as the area of "clinical trials".

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

A gain for the medical faculty exists not only due to the above mentioned research focus, my continued teaching in Bonn, the continuous supervision of PhD students from Bonn and Leipzig, but also due to my new function as chief doctor of one of the eight nationwide DGAV-certified reference centers for hernia surgery (approx. 700 - 800 hernia interventions/year) and at the same time a DGAV-certified competence center for coloproctology (at least 100 colorectal surgical interventions/year), whereby very large annual patient numbers are reached and the medical processes are subjected to a high quality standard. In addition, I have a surgical robot in my department. Through this, the process and outcome quality of robotically assisted procedures in hernia and colorectal surgery from the department for which I am responsible can be scientifically evaluated complementary to the process and outcome quality of robotically assisted procedures in colorectal, pancreas and esophageal surgery at the Surgical University Hospital Bonn through the registers and clinical studies on this topic that are kept, which will lead to a larger data pool for valid statistical analyses or clinical studies for the robotic procedures that are not yet widespread.
Based on my basic science work on postoperative intestinal pathophysiology, close and synergistic collaborations continue to occur, including with the Surgical Research Section and the Surgical Study Center.
In addition to the extensive courses offered by the Department of Surgery, in which I continue to participate (block clerkship, seminars, main lecture, cross section), I also offer ultrasound courses for medical students.
Due to my many years of employment at the UKB and the continued close networking as well as corresponding agreements with the current employer, the continuation of the research projects and the teaching of the courses are guaranteed.

Professional background:
Prof. Herberg studied human medicine at the Ruhr University in Bochum and completed her practical year at the Universities of London, Ontario (Canada), Dunedin (New Zealand) and Ohio (USA). After working as an assistant doctor in clinical chemistry at the Ruhr University in Bochum and in pediatrics at the Municipal Children's Hospital in Cologne, she moved to Bonn in 1990. There she received her specialist qualification in pediatrics and adolescent medicine in 1995 and her specialization in pediatric cardiology in 1999. This was followed by additional qualifications in intensive care medicine, cardiology for adults with congenital heart defects (EMAH in German) and interventional radiology. Since 1999, she has been senior physician and deputy to the medical director of pediatric cardiology. Since 2020, Prof. Herberg has headed the Perinatal Cardiology Section.
Prof. Herberg is, among other things, a member of the DEGUM with DEGUM III qualification, currently on the board of the DGPK, a member of the DGK and was, in addition, head of the Fetal Working Group of the AEPC.

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

The gain for the faculty is the strengthening of the field of perinatal cardiology, which is closely related to prenatal diagnostics and cardiovascular research.  Through her longitudinal research of cardiovascular diseases from the fetal period to adulthood (including as principal investigator in Germany for the "FAST" trial, the registries for long-QT patients and fetal heart valve disruption), Prof. Herberg is closely networked internationally and gives international visibility to the interdisciplinary work in the focus area of perinatal cardiology.  She strengthens Bonn as a location for cardiac research and as an interdisciplinary ultrasound center of the DEGUM through her work on 3D echocardiography, cardiac function diagnostics and circulation simulation. Prof. Herberg is actively involved in teaching (clinical teaching, ultrasound seminars and intensive care seminars, senior mentoring, doctoral seminars) and in continuing education for physicians (training curriculum in pediatric cardiology, echo seminars). Prof. Herberg is a member of the ethics committee of the UKB.

• Detection and identification of bacterial DNA in vitro and from various biological fluids in septic patients.
• Mechanisms of action of stimulatory CpG oligonucleotides and suppressive oligonucleotides on immune cells.
• Identification and bioinformatic analysis of regulatory networks and signaling cascades induced by Toll-like receptor ligands and experimental validation in knock-out animals
• Gene expression analyses using microarrays to study inflammatory regulation
• Studies on capillary leak syndrome during cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

The main research areas outlined above are in part closely linked to other working groups at the UKB and I regularly supervise PhD students as part of my research projects. In addition to clinical and research work, I have been involved in teaching for many years. This includes the main lecture in anesthesiology as well as conducting seminars. Furthermore, I take care of the supervision of the PJ students. The internal training of our staff is also very important to me. Among other things, I organize and moderate weekly training sessions for colleagues that are certified by the North Rhine Medical Association. As a CRM simulation instructor, I am actively involved in the organization and implementation of various workshops and the CRM training "Interdisciplinary Obstetric Emergency Training".
For many years, I have also been involved in the committees of the medical faculty. Since 2013, I have been active as a member of the Habilitation Commission of the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn, since 2014 as a member of the BONFOR Commission on Intramural Research Funding, and since 2018 as a member of the Doctoral Commission.
I am very happy to be able to continue my scientific activities continuously and intensively as well as to be active for student teaching at the university.
