Study Planning Guide

Welcome to our Core Facility MRI. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the steps required to plan and execute your research studies effectively. It outlines the necessary administrative procedures for gaining access to our facilities and booking system, as well as the mandatory safety training and approval processes to ensure competence and the well-being of all users. In this section, you will find specific instructions and resources to help you navigate each step of the process, from initial registration to independent operation of the MR scanner. Please follow the guidelines below to ensure a smooth and successful experience.

Administrative Requirements

To get started with your study, you'll need to complete several administrative steps to gain access to our facilities and booking system.

Registration and Access

  1.  Register on Bonn Technology Campus: 
    If you would like to have your data delivered from the core facility to a network drive, you will need an account for the Isilon storage at the Bonn Technology Campus. You can request this access at the following link.
  2. Access the Booking System: 
    To use the booking system, you must also request access. If you have a University of Bonn email address, you can access the system via Shibboleth.

  3. First Login Procedure:
    After receiving your login credentials, follow these steps to ensure everything is set up correctly.
    • Check login by accessing the Booking System: https://ppms.eu/uni-bonn/?MRT
    • Print and complete a registration form for each project you'll be working on to ensure proper billing and allocation of resources.
    • Obtain necessary signatures from your supervisor and submit to Core Facility

Training and Safety

Safety is our top priority. Before you can operate the MR scanner, you must complete the necessary training and safety briefings.

 Safety Briefing

  • This briefing is mandatory for all users before operating the MR scanner and covers potential hazards and safe operation procedures.
    • Regularly scheduled, with limited participants due to current restrictions
    •  Included in Core Facility training program

Risk Assessment

  • Before entering the magnet room, you must complete a risk assessment to identify and mitigate any potential dangers.
    • Complete risk assessment document before entering the magnet room
    • Available in German and English at the magnet room entrance
    • Contact staff if unsure; do not enter without clearance

Workshop Training

  • Our comprehensive workshops cover device operation, safety protocols, and advanced techniques.
    • Regular workshops cover device operation and safety protocols
    • Topics include:
      • Participant and personnel safety
      • Performing measurements
      • Functional MRI
      • Data archiving
    • Plan 2-4 weeks for comprehensive training

Approval Process

  • To ensure competence and safety, all users must go through an approval process before independent operation.
    • Conduct a trial measurement with Core Facility staff
    • Demonstrate understanding of safe operation procedures
    • Receive recommendations for additional training if needed
    • Obtain permission for independent measurements after successful approval

Additional Information

  • Refresher workshops are available after initial training to keep your skills up-to-date.
  • Allow sufficient time for training and instruction when planning your study.
