With a letter of recommendation, the Dean of Studies certifies your enrollment, your semester of study, and the state examinations you have already passed. In addition, the letter of recommendation includes a recommendation for your intended stay abroad. Here, the applicant's suitability for the clinical internship or practical year is highlighted.
Some institutions require a “Letter of Good Standing.” This form of Letter of Recommendation requires a grade point average of at least 2.5. In addition, you should be within the standard period of study or have a maximum of two semesters of justified study delay (e.g., research stays or internships abroad).
In addition to being issued in German, letters of recommendation/letters of good standing are currently also issued in the following languages: English, French, Italian, and Spanish.
When applying for clinical internships or practical training periods abroad or at another institution in Germany, a letter of recommendation from your home university is often required.
Please send us a request by email (application via email) and attach your exam certificates as PDF copies to the application (1st section of the medical examination (Physikum) and/or 2nd section of the medical examination).
Processing time: 7–10 days
Due to the pandemic, the issuance of all certificates is currently regulated as follows:
Digital formats will be sent to you by e-mail
Paper formats will be sent to you by post to the desired postal address
Standardised Letters of Recommendation
With a letter of recommendation, the dean of studies recommends you for your stay abroad and certifies your enrollment, your semester of study, and the state examinations you have already passed.
Some universities abroad use standardized forms. In some of these cases, the home university is also asked to assess other skills or personal information of the applicants, such as language skills or entries in the Federal Central Register, for example, the police clearance certificate.
If the foreign institution requires a standardized application form, you will need this form to apply for clinical electives, practical training, or research semesters abroad.
Please send us an email request with your name and student ID number and enclose the pre-printed form and the supporting documents required by the institution with your application.
The language certificate with the required language test level must not be older than three years.
Processing time: 7-10 days
Due to the pandemic, the issuance of all certificates is currently regulated as follows:
- Digital formats will be sent to you by e-mail
- Paper formats will be sent to you by post to the desired postal address
Transcript of Records
The ToR is an overview of your academic performance and reflects your current level of achievement with the courses and exam grades you have completed so far (if available). We issue Transcripts of Records in German or English and, depending on your needs, in digital or paper form.
The ToR is usually required in order to study abroad for one or more semesters, change universities and/or fields of study, or register for a state examination outside the EU (e.g., the American USMLE).
Starting in the 2012/13 winter semester, students can also issue their own transcripts in English and German via Basis. To do so, please log in to BASIS, select the ‘Functions’ tab, and then ‘Notenspiegel’. A window will open with ‘Degree 39 State Examination’. Click on the information icon and open the PDF file ‘Performance Overview’ .
If you want to publish the English version, click on the English flag in the upper right corner before opening the document.
Please contact us if you need a ToR with a signature and stamp. Please send us the request with your name and student ID number by email.

Certifications for recognitions of clinical internships
Clinical internships should be completed during lecture-free periods. However, you can also complete clinical internships during teaching periods, e.g., if you are not required to attend classes or are taking a semester off. In such exceptional cases, the LPA requires confirmation from the faculty, which you can obtain from us.
