Nursing service The nursing service as part of the dental medicine program, also known as a nursing internship, covers a period of 30 calendar days. It provides practical training in nursing and is an essential component of dental training. This internship is mandatory for all dental medicine students and is a prerequisite for admission to the first section of the dental examination.

Further information can be found in the information sheet from the State Examination Office.

You can also complete the internship at the UKB.

  • The nursing service can be completed either before the start of dental studies (at the earliest after receiving a high school diploma or other university entrance qualification) or during the lecture-free period and during a semester break. Internships completed as part of school education are not recognized.
  • The nursing service must be completed before registering for the first section of the dental examination. Time off from classes also includes leave of absence during a semester break, but not individual breaks during regular lecture periods.
  • The main objective is to give dental students an insight into the processes, structure, and tasks of nursing. In doing so, they should acquire basic knowledge of nursing practice.

First-Aid course

For all dental students, proof of first aid training is a basic requirement for admission to the first section of the dental examination.

The first aid course must comprise of at least nine teaching units, including both theoretical instruction and practical exercises. This training must be completed before registering for the first section. Proof of completion of first aid training must not be more than three years old at the time of application for admission.

Further information can be found in the information sheet from the State Examination Office.

According to § 13 of the Licensing Regulations for Dentists (ZApprO), first aid training should provide sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills in first aid. Proof of participation in this training must be submitted in the form of a certified copy when registering for the first section of the dental examination.

Virtual lectures during pre-clinic

Most likely, lectures in the 2024/25 winter semester will be held in person in the lecture hall and offered via live broadcast on Zoom.

However, previous semesters have shown that technical problems can repeatedly arise during live broadcasts, which lecturers on site are unable to resolve at short notice. Simultaneous interaction with students in the lecture hall and in the Zoom meeting is also only possible to a limited extent. The Zoom broadcast should therefore be regarded as a non-binding supplement; the focus of the lectures will be on the in-person event in the lecture hall.

If there are persistent problems with the hybrid format for which no solution can be found, it may be necessary to switch to a purely in-person format.

To dial into the webinar, you must use a University of Bonn Zoom account, which you can set up via the free campus license for students at https://uni-bonn.zoom.us.

        • Elective I*

*The elective can be submitted to the State Examination Office for the “First Section of the Dental Examination” and will be noted accordingly on the Z1 certificate. However, this is not mandatory. At our university, however, it is necessary to complete the Elective I in order to register for an Elective II course in the third section of the program.

        Time tables

First-semester students are assigned to a planning group at the beginning of the winter semester. Assignment to a planning group is binding and comes with a fixed timetable for the first four semesters. It is not possible to change planning groups; exceptions may only be made in rare cases, such as caring for sick relatives or childcare, and must be documented in writing.

        Elective

The Elective I can be taken during the first stage of dental studies. This subject can be submitted to the State Examination Office for the “First Stage of the Dental Examination” and will be noted accordingly on the Z1 certificate. However, this is not mandatory.

At our university, however, it is necessary to successfully complete Elective I in order to register for an Elective II course in the third stage of study. This regulation ensures that students are well prepared.

Students can then register via the BASIS portal. The selection of elective subjects offers a wide range of topics that enable students to tailor their study experience to their individual interests and career goals.

As a rule, elective course I is selected from the list of elective courses offered by the Faculty of Medicine in the electronic course catalog (www.basis.uni-bonn.de). Please make sure that the course you are considering fits into your schedule. Registration takes place online during the registration period, stating your priorities (first choice priority 1, second choice priority 2, third choice priority 3). If you are not allocated a place in one of your chosen elective courses I, you will have the opportunity to re-register for any remaining elective course I places during a short re-registration period. After the course has ended, your performance will be recorded directly by the course instructors in the electronic exam administration system BASIS.

Depending on your personal interests or professional goals, you may also choose a course from another faculty or a language course from the Language Learning Center at the University of Bonn (SLZ) as your elective I. You are responsible for registering and complying with the relevant registration procedures and deadlines. Before the course begins, please send an email requesting approval to include the selected course as an elective I in your dentistry studies (email to Christoph.Cavazzini@ukbonn.de).

If you wish to take an SLZ language course as an elective I, it must be at least level B1 – with the exception of sign language – and must not be your native language. After completing the language course, the Examination Office in the Dean's Office will record your performance (or lack thereof) as an elective I in BASIS.

If you choose a course from another faculty, please first contact the course instructor to clarify the possibility of participation and grading outside your field of study. Then, BEFORE the course begins, submit an informal application for approval as elective I to the Deputy Dean of Studies, PD Dr. Ernst-Heinrich Helfgen (by email to Mr. Cavazzini, see above).

After completion of the course, your exam results will usually be sent directly from the instructor to our Examination Office and entered into BASIS. In exceptional cases, please print out the certificate form for elective subject I, which is available on the pre-clinical website, and have the upper part filled out and stamped by the instructor. Please submit this form, together with a printout of the informal approval, to the Examination Office of the Dean's Office so that the elective subject can be recorded in BASIS.

If dental students have previously studied another subject at a university, a graded transcript may be recognized as an elective subject I under certain circumstances if a connection to the dental program can be demonstrated. If the course is equivalent in terms of form and content, you will be issued with a certificate of equivalence by Dr. Ernst-Heinrich Helfgen, the deputy Dean of Studies. This certificate must be submitted to the State Examination Office for Medicine in Düsseldorf (LPA).

Submit an application to the LPA for recognition of elective I from your previous studies and enclose the certificate of equivalence and the original transcript of records with your application. After receiving the credit transfer notice from the LPA, please submit it by email to the Examination Office of the Dean of Studies so that the recognized elective subject can be entered into BASIS. Keep the original certificate, as it may need to be resubmitted to the LPA when you register for the first section of the dental examination.

For further information, please contact Mr. Christoph Cavazzini (Christoph.Cavazzini@ukbonn.de) from the program management office.

        Healthcare & occupational safety

In November 2019, the Measles Protection Act was passed by the German Bundestag.  The law regulates not only compulsory vaccination for kindergarten children and schoolchildren, but also for healthcare workers. This means that students of human medicine and dentistry are also subject to the law.

The aim of the law is to improve individual protection against measles, especially for people who regularly come into contact with others in community and healthcare facilities. In the medium to long term, this will help achieve the WHO's global goal of reducing the incidence of measles.

People who have received two measles vaccinations in their lifetime or who have serologically proven immune protection are considered protected. Since March 1, 2020, the Faculty of Medicine can no longer admit students to certain courses without proof of vaccination or serological immune protection.

Exception: People born before 1971 are not affected by the Measles Protection Act due to presumed natural immunity and do not require certification.

Neither vaccinations nor serological tests can be carried out by the occupational health service. Please contact your family doctor for this. The form to be completed can be found here.

Please send proof of vaccination or serological immunity by email to vorklinik@uni-bonn.de during the first semester.

The measles vaccination is typically covered by health insurace.

Pre-SciMed is a doctoral preparation program that familiarizes talented medical students at the University of Bonn with clinical and basic scientific research at an early stage. You can only register for Pre-SciMed during the pre-clinical phase of your studies and will gain exciting insights into research methods and topics for a possible future doctoral thesis over two consecutive semesters.

          The program consists of

          • one lecture in the winter semester and one lecture in the summer semester, in which important molecular biological, physiological, genetic, and biochemical techniques are taught. The lectures take place on Wednesdays from 2:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. (winter semester) and from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (summer semester).
          • a two-week structured internship during the lecture-free period after the winter semester, in which the knowledge acquired is applied in the laboratory. The internship takes place in the renowned research laboratories of the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Bonn, which cooperates with Pre-SciMed. Parallel to the internship, there is a seminar in which you will deal with current research questions and prepare your own seminar presentation.

Pre-SciMed is a unique opportunity to get involved in basic clinical research at an early stage and prepare for your doctorate in the best possible way. Register now with Dr. Alexander Flegler (pre-scimed@uni-bonn.de) and become part of Pre-SciMed!

          Pre-clincical mentoring program

The mentoring program is primarily intended to help students in their first preclinical semester get started with their studies. It gives them the opportunity to approach fellow students in the clinical section and benefit from their experiences. The mentors are a constant point of contact for problems and help with questions about studying and student life in Bonn.

Another important aspect is to give first-year students an understanding of the medical significance of the basic subjects through concise case studies, thereby increasing their motivation and enjoyment of learning. By working on the cases in a relaxed atmosphere, students lose their fear of reading short specialist texts independently and learn to apply their newly acquired knowledge to clinical questions together.

Participation in the mentoring program is voluntary. At the beginning of the semester, new students have the opportunity to register for one of the seminar groups offered by the mentors. In this way, the dates can be coordinated without overlapping with the preclinical timetables.

          Eine erste Vorschau des Mentorenprogramms

In the first and second preclinical semesters, mentors give you an insight into the clinical part of medical studies.

You will work together to solve various cases using your preclinical knowledge, just like Dr. House. You will also have the opportunity to learn some basic practical skills. As an added bonus, you can talk to experienced students about their experiences during their studies and get tips.

In the fourth semester, many students face the Physikum exam. The “Emma” seminar is designed to give students the opportunity to practice for the oral part of the first section of the oral exam. Students can review what they already know and practice how to best present their knowledge.

The “Physikum simulations” recreate the real exam situation (with subject-specific exam questions). This allows students to get an impression of the upcoming oral exam and their level of knowledge, and receive valuable feedback on their strengths and weaknesses.
