The vice-deanery for International Affairs and Career Development forms a key part of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bonn. Acting as the interface between the university and the University Hospital Bonn (UKB), we are responsible for steering and managing the Faculty's strategic approach to international cooperation and the promotion of young scientists.

Our team can support you with all matters relating to:

  • International cooperation: We promote partnerships with institutions worldwide to ensure research and teaching are conducted at the highest level.
  • Career development: We help early career researchers design their own career paths, positioning Bonn as an attractive, forward-looking centre of science and strengthening its long-term prospects. More info on financial career support by the Medical Faculty.
  • Administrative coordination: We coordinate cooperation between project participants, support the organisation of delegation visits and events, and contribute to the provision of information material and communication and public relations work.

Knowledge security in international cooperation

Evaluating opportunities and risks in cooperation with international partners

International cooperation offers great opportunities, but in times of growing geopolitical tensions, it requires a thorough understanding of legal and security-related framework conditions. The DAAD's Centre for International Academic Cooperation (KIWi) supports universities in systematically analysing risks and opportunities and planning partnership projects in a responsible manner.

Here are two key publications that can serve as a guide:

KIWi Compass No red lines - The KIWi Kompass ‘No red lines’ enables sensitive assessments and informed decisions when establishing and expanding scientific collaborations. As a criteria-based guide, it creates a basis for discussion and work for internal university processes to establish sustainable risk, security and crisis management.

KIWi Checklist Knowledge Security - The KIWi Checklist Knowledge Security takes up the latest recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities for strengthening knowledge security in Germany. It serves to examine and reflect on security-relevant dimensions of international academic cooperation and is intended both as a self-assessment tool for scientists responsible for cooperation at the individual level and as a possible basis for internal university review and coordination processes.

Both documents can be found on the DAAD website: KIWi Publications

Master's Programs

In addition to the ERASMUS program, the establishment of new international master's programs and graduate schools is an important means of recruiting outstanding students in the medical field. These training programs are mostly characterized by one of the research foci of our faculty and the high expertise of its members.

The following master programs have already been established:

Doctoral Programs

In addition to the international Master's programs, a number of International doctoral programs and graduate schools have been established. The Bonn International Graduate Schools (BIGS) deserve special mention:

  • BIGS Drug Sciences
  • BIGS Neuroscience
  • BIGS Immunosciences and Infection
  • BIGS Clinical and Population Science

The faculty is also particularly proud of the DFG-funded IRTG 2168 Bonn & Melbourne Research and Graduate School and the International Max Planck Research School for Brain and Behaviour.

Collaborations

Collaborations with other universities, especially outside of Germany, have become increasingly important in recent years. The Medical Faculty is therefore particularly proud of its long-standing cooperation with its university partners in Europe and on other continents.

Close links with non-university research institutions are also an integral part of Bonn's research strategy. Therefore, intensive research cooperations with institutes from the Helmholtz, Max Planck and Fraunhofer societies have been strengthened over a long time.
