The grading scale determines the grade achieved in a multiple-choice exam. The grade is based on the number of points required to pass the exam (pass mark). The grading scale is regulated in § 20 para. 5 of the study and examination regulations for the degree program “Human Medicine”. Accordingly, the grade is

very good, if at least 75%
good, if at least 50% but less than 75%
satisfactory, if at least 25% but less than 50% and
sufficient, if none or less than 25%

Written examinations may be offered as online examinations at the Faculty of Medicine. They either take place as face-to-face examinations and are organized in cooperation with the HRZ or - depending on the relevant regulations in the examination regulations - can be offered as online examinations. The online exams are also organized in cooperation with the HRZ.

Our online self-assessments (OSA) are subject-specific study orientation tests that give you an insight into the respective subject. Using tasks and questions, you can check online whether your expectations of your chosen subject are realistic and whether the subject matches your interests and abilities - in short: how well the subject suits you.

Only you can see your result and your “score” has no influence on your chances of admission or application! The OSA is an offer designed to help you with your study orientation.

The traditional examination interview is frequently replaced by practical exercises and presentations in the Faculty of Medicine. OSCE stands for objective structured clinical examination. Accordingly, examination procedures are standardized by OSCE.

Practical clinical skills that are relevant to the doctor's later work are specifically tested, such as doctor-patient communication, examination techniques, the assessment of findings in the form of ECG or X-ray images and, resuscitation measures. In the OSCE exam, examiners use checklists to assess students' skills as objectively as possible. Real-life procedures are simulated in medical examinations.

As part of the ERASMUS program, you have the possibility to study medicine as a student at a partner university abroad.

Under certain conditions, it is possible to have partially completed coursework and examinations recognized internally.

It is important that the work completed is equivalent to the work to be completed.

Partial recognition is at the discretion of the lecturer. The lecturer can decide whether he/she wishes to recognize the work already completed as partial credit in his/her subject. Please note that partial recognition does not mean that the entire certificate is recognized as passed, but only a partial achievement, such as regular or successful participation

You can find the forms for partial recognition here:

The pre-clinical study section covers four semesters and concludes with the 1st medical examination. In addition, you must complete training in first aid and a 90 calendar day nursing internship before starting your studies or during the non-teaching periods in the pre-clinical study section.

The following applies to examinations in the Human Medicine and Dentistry degree programs (new study and examination regulations): If you fail an examination or withdraw from an examination, you will automatically be registered for the next examination date (also across semesters). It is not necessary for you to register.

The relative pass mark for multiple-choice examinations is defined in Section 20 (4) of the Study and Examination Regulations for the “Human Medicine” degree program and Section 21 (4) of the Study and Examination Regulations for the “Dentistry” degree program.
Accordingly, a candidate has passed the examination if he or she does not fall below the average examination score of all candidates taking part in the examination by more than 22%. The relative pass mark does not apply if it is less than 50% of the maximum number of points allowed. If less than 50% of the maximum number of points is achieved, the examination is failed in any case. If the relative pass mark is more than 60% of the maximum number of points planned, the relative pass mark is also not applied and the pass mark is 60% of the maximum number of points planned.

A class is officially canceled if the lecturers do not appear more than 15 minutes after the official start time. Students do not need to wait longer than this. An informal collection of signatures is sufficient as proof of attendance (for courses requiring attendance). The time limit of 15 minutes cannot be extended by an announcement (notification by the lecturer after ten minutes of delay that a representative will appear within the next 15 minutes).

Report a cancelled class

Re-registration takes place by transferring the semester fee using the transfer form prepared by the Student Secretariat. The deadlines can be found on the University of Bonn website under Dates and Deadlines. Students who fail to meet the re-registration deadline may lose their place on the degree course in Medicine. Further details on the re-registration procedure can be found in the documents that students receive from the Student Secretariat.

If you have failed an examination, you can retake the examination on the next date on which it is offered. Registration for the repeat examination and the frequency with which examination dates are offered depends on the respective examination regulations.

The rooms in the teaching building, as well as the lecture halls in the BMZ and two seminar rooms in Life & Brain are primarily intended for events related to teaching at the Faculty of Medicine. Further information on booking these rooms can be found here.

"Small" secondary auditors:
Students who are enrolled at a German university and wish to complete credits at our faculty (‘small secondary auditors’) must register with the University of Bonn and pay an enrollment fee.

"Large" secondary auditors:
Students who are enrolled at another German university and have successfully applied for a PJ place at the Faculty of Medicine do not have to enrol as secondary auditors at the University of Bonn. They remain enrolled as first-year students at their home university and prove this status at the PJ office at the start of the tertial.

Further information on small and large secondary auditors can be found here.

In degree programs with restricted admission, such as medical studies, admission to a second degree program is limited. Out of consideration for those who do not yet have a German degree, there is a special quota of 3% of study places. If the first degree has been completed by the application deadline, the application will be considered within this quota.

All information can be found here.

At the University of Bonn and many other universities, the academic year is divided into two semesters. The winter semester begins in the fall, the summer semester in the spring. The formal semester commencement times are not identical to the lecture periods. These change every year.

The semester times are determined individually for the clinical study section of Human Medicine. You can find the current overviews here.

The timetable for the cohorts in the practical year can be found here.

Students at the University of Bonn have to pay a fee each semester, which is decided democratically by student representatives. More than half of the semester fee is used to finance the semester and NRW ticket. Around a third goes to the Studierendenwerk, which contributes to the maintenance of the canteens, for example, provides accommodation for students or organizes educational support. Smaller amounts go to student self-administration (AStA), the student councils and university sports. Student social institutions and aid funds are also supported.

The amount of the student welfare contribution for the current semester is listed on the University of Bonn website.

Students who want to or need to interrupt their studies for an important reason can apply for a leave of absence at the Registrar's Office.

Once a year, the student body elects the student representatives (FSV) and - depending on the size of the student body, directly or indirectly via the FSV - the student council. These include, for example, the executive boards and study commissions of the institutes, in which, among other things, the conception and further development of study programs is discussed and decided upon, as well as examination boards, in which questions regarding the application of study and examination regulations are discussed and detailed regulations are decided upon.
